To use ChatGPT, open chatgpt.com or the app, type what you need in plain language with enough context, then refine the answer by replying. This guide covers signing up, writing prompts that work, files, voice, memory, projects, custom instructions, privacy settings and the limits to keep in mind.
- ChatGPT works best when you give it a role, the goal, the context and the format you want, in one message.
- Reply to improve an answer instead of starting over: ask it to shorten, change tone, add examples or check its own work.
- Custom instructions and memory save you from repeating who you are; projects keep files and chats for one topic together.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone in Data controls if you don't want your chats used for training, and never paste secrets.
- Check facts, numbers and citations before you rely on them, because ChatGPT can state wrong things confidently.
How to use ChatGPT: the short version
To use ChatGPT, describe your task in plain language, include the context a smart stranger would need, say what the result should look like, then keep the conversation going until the answer is right. That is the whole method. The rest of this guide shows how to do each part well and which features save you time once the basics click.
ChatGPT is a chat assistant from OpenAI built on large language models. It writes, explains, summarizes, translates, analyzes files, searches the web, talks out loud and creates images. It does not "know" things the way a database does: it predicts text that fits your request, which is why good input matters and why you should check important facts (more on that in the section on limits).
How do I sign up and start my first chat?
You can start in under two minutes on the web or on your phone. Go to chatgpt.com or install the ChatGPT app for iOS, Android, macOS or Windows from the official store, then sign up with an email address or a Google, Apple or Microsoft account.
- Open chatgpt.com or the app and select Sign up.
- Confirm your email or finish the social login.
- Type a question in the message box at the bottom and press Enter.
- Read the answer, then reply in the same chat to adjust it.
- Use New chat in the sidebar when you switch to an unrelated topic, so old context doesn't leak into the new task.
Your conversations appear in the sidebar. You can rename, archive, share or delete them from the menu next to each chat.
Which ChatGPT plan do you need?
Most people should start on the free plan and upgrade only when they hit a limit they actually feel. At the time of writing (October 2026), the ChatGPT pricing page lists these individual plans:
| Plan | Price per month | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Unlimited everyday text chats (abuse guardrails apply), limited uploads, voice, images, deep research and memory |
| Go | $8 | More messages with tools, uploads, images, voice chats and longer memory; may include ads |
| Plus | $20 | Advanced reasoning models, expanded uploads, deep research, memory, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs |
| Pro | from $100 | A choice of usage tiers, the strongest reasoning models and the highest limits |
Business and Enterprise plans add admin controls, shared workspaces and contract terms for companies. Plan features change often, so check the pricing page before you pay.
How do I write a good ChatGPT prompt?
A good prompt gives ChatGPT four things: the role or perspective you want, the goal, the context it can't guess, and the format of the answer. Short prompts get generic answers because the model fills every gap with the most average guess.
Compare these two requests:
Write an email about the delay. You are writing as a project manager at a small web agency.Goal: tell a client their website launch moves from May 12 to May 19.Context: the delay is because their payment provider approval took longerthan expected. We already finished design and content. The client isfriendly but was excited about the launch date.Format: under 120 words, warm and direct, one sentence of apology, end with the new date and what they need to do (nothing). The second version takes 40 seconds longer to write and usually saves three rounds of edits. A simple structure to remember:
- Who: "Act as a tax advisor explaining to a freelancer" or "Answer as a senior Python developer."
- What: the task and the outcome you want, in one sentence.
- Context: facts, constraints, audience, what you already tried, what to avoid.
- Format: length, bullet points or a table, tone, language, reading level.
If you don't know what context matters, ask ChatGPT to interview you first:
I want to plan a 4-day trip to Lisbon in March. Before you suggest anything, ask me up to 6 questions that would change your recommendations.Ask them all at once. For dozens of ready templates sorted by job, see our ChatGPT prompts for work, and for the reasoning behind these techniques, read the prompt engineering guide.
How do I get better answers after the first reply?
Treat the first answer as a draft and steer it with short follow-ups in the same chat. ChatGPT keeps the conversation in context, so you don't need to repeat the original request.
Follow-ups that work well:
- "Make it half as long and drop the jargon."
- "Give me three different versions: formal, casual, and very short."
- "Turn this into a table with columns for cost, effort and risk."
- "What are the weakest points of your answer? Fix them."
- "Explain step 3 as if I've never used Excel."
- "You assumed I have a team. I work alone. Redo it."
Two habits help a lot. First, when an answer goes off track, correct the specific assumption instead of saying "that's wrong." Second, when a chat gets long and starts drifting, ask for a summary of what you've agreed so far, open a new chat and paste the summary in. Long conversations can push early details out of the model's working context. At the time of writing, the pricing page lists a 27K-token context window for the fast model on Free and 54K on Plus, which is roughly a few dozen pages of text.
You can also edit a message you already sent (hover over it and select the pencil icon) or regenerate a reply to get a different attempt.
How do I use ChatGPT with files, images and voice?
ChatGPT can read files you attach, look at images, and hold a spoken conversation, which covers many tasks that typing alone handles badly.
Files and documents
Select the + button in the message box to attach PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, slides, text files, images or audio. Then say exactly what you want: "Summarize the obligations for the tenant in this lease" works better than "summarize this."
The file upload limits at the time of writing:
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Documents and presentations | up to 512 MB per file, 2 million tokens per text file |
| Spreadsheets and CSV | about 50 MB, depending on row size |
| Images | 20 MB each |
| Audio | 512 MB |
| Upload rate | up to 80 files every 3 hours; Free users get 3 uploads per day |
For spreadsheets, ChatGPT can run analysis code, build charts and clean data. Ask it to show the formula or code it used so you can check the logic. Our guide to AI for data analysis covers that workflow in detail.
Images
Upload a photo or screenshot and ask about it: "What does this error message mean?", "Which of these plants is overwatered?", "Turn this whiteboard photo into a clean task list." You can also ask ChatGPT to create images from a description and then refine them in follow-ups.
Voice
Select the voice icon to talk instead of type. Voice mode suits practicing a language, rehearsing a presentation, thinking out loud while walking, or getting help with your hands busy. Free users get limited voice chats, and paid plans add more time and voice with video.
What are custom instructions, memory and projects?
These three features give ChatGPT lasting context, so you stop retyping who you are and what you're working on.
Custom instructions are standing rules applied to every chat. Set them under Settings > Personalization with Enable customization turned on. According to OpenAI's help article, Free and Go users can save up to 1,500 characters and paid plans up to 5,000. A useful starting point:
I'm a freelance UX designer in Berlin. I write in US English.Be concise: lead with the answer, then details only if needed.Use tables for comparisons. No motivational filler. When you're unsure or the answer depends on recent information, say so.If my request is ambiguous, ask one clarifying question before answering.Memory lets ChatGPT keep relevant details from past chats, such as your job, your kids' ages or the tools you use. You control it under Settings > Personalization > Memory, where you can review saved memories, turn off referencing chat history or turn memory off entirely. You can also tell ChatGPT "remember that I'm vegetarian" or "forget my old address."
Projects group related chats, files and instructions around one topic, such as a house renovation, a course or a client. Create one with New project in the sidebar, upload reference files and add project instructions. Every chat inside the project can use that material. Projects are available on Free with lower limits than paid plans.
If you want a conversation with no history and no memory, start a temporary chat. It doesn't appear in your history, doesn't create memories and isn't used for training, though OpenAI may keep it for up to 30 days for safety.
What can you use ChatGPT for every day?
ChatGPT is most useful for tasks where you can judge the quality of the result quickly. Here are everyday uses that hold up well:
| Area | Example request |
|---|---|
| Writing | "Rewrite this message to my landlord so it's firm but polite." |
| Learning | "Explain compound interest with a $1,000 example, then quiz me with 3 questions." |
| Work | "Turn these meeting notes into decisions, owners and deadlines." |
| Research | "Search the web for the current EU rules on carry-on liquids and cite the sources." |
| Spreadsheets | "Write a formula that flags rows where column C is more than 30 days past today." |
| Planning | "Make a 3-day meal plan for two, under $60, using what's in this fridge photo." |
| Coding | "Explain what this Python function does and point out bugs." |
| Language | "Correct my Spanish and explain each mistake briefly." |
A good rule: use ChatGPT to get to a strong first draft or a clear explanation fast, then apply your own judgment. If you're comparing assistants for a specific job, our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison goes task by task.
When you ask about anything recent (prices, laws, product versions, news), tell ChatGPT to search the web and cite its sources. Without search, it answers from training data that may be out of date.
What are ChatGPT's limits and risks?
ChatGPT can be wrong while sounding certain, it doesn't know your private situation unless you tell it, and anything you paste is data you are sharing with a company. Knowing these limits is part of using it well.
- Made-up facts. The model can invent citations, statistics, quotes and legal or medical details. Verify anything you'll publish, sign or act on. Our explainer on AI hallucinations shows how to spot and reduce them.
- Stale knowledge. Without web search, answers reflect the training data. Ask for sources on time-sensitive topics.
- Math and counting. Reasoning models handle math far better than before, but ask ChatGPT to show its working or run code for anything with money involved.
- Usage limits. Every plan has caps on advanced models, uploads and tools. When you hit one, ChatGPT may switch to a smaller model or ask you to wait.
- Privacy. On personal plans, your chats can be used to train models unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings > Data controls. Turning it off doesn't delete your history. Business and Enterprise workspaces have their own data terms.
Never paste passwords, API keys, bank details, customer personal data or confidential company documents into ChatGPT unless your employer explicitly allows it on an approved plan.

How to start using ChatGPT today
Pick one real task you do every week and run it through ChatGPT this week. A short plan:
- Create an account and set custom instructions with your role, language and preferred answer style.
- Decide on your privacy settings in Data controls before you share anything personal.
- Try the four-part prompt (who, what, context, format) on that weekly task.
- Reply at least twice to refine the answer instead of accepting the first draft.
- Attach a real file, such as a PDF or spreadsheet, and ask a specific question about it.
- Create a project for an ongoing topic and add its reference files.
- Check one factual claim from each important answer against a primary source.
After a couple of weeks you'll know which tasks ChatGPT speeds up and which ones it doesn't. If you later move from chat to AI agents that write and ship code for you, Orkio runs those agents on an always-on cloud box so they keep working after you close your laptop.
Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT free to use?
Yes, there is a free plan with unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, voice, image creation and deep research. Paid plans (Go, Plus and Pro at the time of writing) raise those limits and add advanced reasoning models and features such as scheduled tasks.
Do I need an account to use ChatGPT?
You can try ChatGPT without signing in, but an account gives you chat history, memory, custom instructions, projects and file uploads that follow you across devices. Signing up takes an email address or a Google, Apple or Microsoft login.
Can ChatGPT read PDFs and spreadsheets?
Yes. You can attach PDFs, Word files, spreadsheets, slides, images and audio to a chat and ask questions about them. Free users can upload a few files per day, and very large spreadsheets may be cut off, so check that the answer reflects the whole file.
Does ChatGPT remember previous conversations?
It can. With Memory turned on, ChatGPT may use saved memories and past chats to personalize answers. You can review, correct or delete what it remembers under Settings, Personalization, Memory, or use a temporary chat that does not create memories.
Is it safe to put work documents into ChatGPT?
It depends on your company's policy and your plan. Business and Enterprise plans are not used for training by default, while on personal plans you should turn off model training in Data controls. Never paste passwords, API keys, customer personal data or anything under NDA without permission.
